How solar panels work

It is the principle of Photovoltaic Effect, which refers to photons of light knocking electrons of semiconductors into a higher state of energy to create electricity. The term photovoltaic denotes the unbiased operating mode of a photodiode in which current through the device is entirely due to the transduced light energy. Virtually all photovoltaic devices are some type of photodiode.

<< Construction of the semiconductor used in solar panels: Positive charge is the silicon atom, and the four negative charge are around the silicon atom.
<< When the boron (in Yellow) is mixed into the silicon crystal, there will be a hole (in Blue) between the boron atom and the silicon atom, because each silicon atom is surounded by 4 electrons, while each boron atom only has 3 electons. The hole is very unstable and likely to absorb electrons to keep stability, such seminconductor is named N-type Semiconductor.

<< For the same reason, when the phosphor (in Yellow) is mixed into the silicon crystal, because the phosphor has 5 electrons, 1 electron(in Red) is very active, and such seminconductor is named P-type Semiconductor.
There are many holes in N-type semiconductor, and many electrons in P-type semiconductor, so when they are combined, there is voltage potential in the connection surface, which is called PN junction.

When the solar panels are under the sunlight, holes and electrons are excitated by the photons and start moving, then the electricity is generated.
